The Rijnmond Earth Center is conceived as a place for learning, experimentation and production, rooted in the industrial landscape of Rotterdam Harbour. Rethinking the conventional warehouse as a space for collective knowledge and material innovation, the project explores how productive activities can reclaim a place within the city.
Through the transformation of an existing industrial warehouse into a regional resource and material hub, the project brings together the spaces, tools and expertise needed to experiment with, produce and build with earth. Supporting the transition towards a bio- and geo-based material culture, the Earth Center aims to foster a new building culture in the Netherlands, connecting local resources, craftsmanship, research and architectural practice.
The building is organised around a series of interconnected halls, each accommodating different scales of production, experimentation and exchange. A large-scale experimentation hall, equipped with a technical gantry and an adjoining woodworking workshop, allows for the construction and testing of full-scale earth structures and building components. At its centre, a generous hall provides space for the storage, preparation and drying of earth materials.
These productive spaces are complemented by an amphitheatre, an exhibition area and a café, opening the building to public encounters, discussions and the sharing of knowledge. A series of smaller ateliers accommodates laboratories, workshops and workspaces for researchers, craftspeople and practitioners.
More than a material production facility, the Rijnmond Earth Center proposes a new typology of productive and educational infrastructure, where making, learning and sharing become part of the same architectural environment.
