From spring to autumn, a canopy reflects the transformations of the landscape. The structure invites wandering and contemplation, a steel plates collects the water of the roof while reflecting the garden colors. A few hidden benches offer the visitor a moment of rest. The tilted reflective roof undersides movement, strengthening the connection between earth and sky. The entire structure and foundations are made from reused wooden balks sourced from Rotterdam’s Harbour. A system of dry foundations covered by soil and shelf allow for unsealed soil and temporary architecture.
The planting of the island represents an interpretation of the three forms of nature, reflecting both the natural and cultural landscape. Wilderness (first nature) is visible in the untouched edge of the island with its native flora, where visitors disembark their boat. The cultural landscape (second nature) takes the form of a wildflower meadow, through which visitors must pass to reach the garden (third nature). The garden that surrounds the pavilion is a relic of a potager, where order has all but disappeared. Designed and built from reclaimed materials, La Loge des Vagabondes rises within the landscape, cultivating contrast and inspiring movement through an “edible mess.”.
